The flames leapt out of the barrel causing the crowd to jump back in shock but their incredible joy couldn’t be quenched. “This is the power of the gospel!” proclaimed Bonnke. Flames engulfed dozens of witchcraft items, amulets and charms as the people danced and sang with a new found freedom. Looking up from the flames there were innumerable faces as far as the eye could see. Hands stretched to the black sky in acceptance of Jesus Christ as their saviour for the first time. The sight was like a sea of corn waving in the breeze which simply stretched on and on. As my mind tried to take in the vast harvest that was being reaped the choir sang “I have decided to follow Jesus”. Rarely, if ever, on this planet has such a huge choir of new converts sung to their saviour at one time in unison. When Bonnke says “The day of the sickle is over bring on the combine harvester” his words are reality.
Those who find new freedom in Christ are cared for by the 200,000 trained counsellors receiving Bonnke’s book “From minus to plus”. As the counsellors go to work the ecstatic choir sings with a congregation of hundreds of thousands which looks like sand on the shore.
There is not time to catch our breath as the tangible presence of God is all around. The moment cannot and will not be wasted as Bonnke understands “Now is the time to set people free from sickness and disease!”. There is a tidal wave of faith for the miraculous and anything can happen. First a young boy whose legs had been twisted by polio comes out with his mother. At first you hardly see the boy, your attention is fixed on his mother who is jumping and waving her arms. Then you notice the boy in a brown suit only about 6 years old taking tentative steps on straight legs. The crowd, it seems has caught some of the mothers joy and are all praising God. This is followed by blind eyes opening which a previously unsaved colleague from work testifies to and now he has been saved! Then a mother with a 16 year old daughter who testifies 17 years ago at a Bonnke crusade her barren womb was opened after 10 years and here is the fruit of that miracle. A lame elderly lady walks across the stage beaming with joy. A man holds a certificate from the doctor his blood sugar is normal and there are no signs of his diabetes. A man walks onto the stage pushing a wheelchair and in front of him a young man in his 30’s walking freely. A picture of the same young man at school in the same wheelchair confirms that this is a man lame and in a wheelchair since childhood who is now walking!
Over the next four days the scene is repeated, but never the same. How can multitudes of salvations, lives changed and incredible healings ever be the same. Every life is transformed forever and the city of Lagos receives fresh rivers of God’s love.
On a personal note there was a tenderness of the Father’s mercy and love we saw and experienced that left us changed forever. We felt the Fire of God and His passion for souls that was imparted into our hearts. Surely as Bonnke would say “Africa will be saved” and in our hearts an echo came for worldwide revival!
